In News , Science The revenge of the ridiculed scientists. In September , my article Publish or Perish: the disease of scientific research highlighted how the Nobel Prize winners in Medicine had been forbidden for years to publish the results of their research, simply because they contradicted what was taught in the faculties world-wide, and accepted by the majority of the scientific community at that time. The recent Nobel Prize in Chemistry, Daniel Schechtman, experienced a situation even more vexing. Because he had the misfortune to make his discovery alone, without the help of other colleagues. Indeed, for the scientific authorities and institutions it is fashionable to proclaim that research is above all a team work. So that any individual discovery is suspect, subject to ridicule, worse, suspected of manipulation of results and scientific fraud.

In one form, the present invention relates to a geopolymer cement which is a substitute for Portland cement. In one form, the present invention relates to a geopolymer cement which includes a solid component activator. However, the production of Portland cement concrete typically results in large carbon dioxide emissions and consequently has a large carbon footprint.

In an attempt to address these shortcomings, other materials such as, for example, geopolymers have been used as a substitute for Portland cement. Geopolymer concrete provides an alternative low carbon footprint option to Portland cement concrete.

Generally, geopolymer concrete is formed by mixing a binder also known as cement and aggregates such as gravel and sand with water. The alkali liquid activator serves to increase the reactivity of the solid components during the concrete preparation step. Thus, there is a need for an activator for the production of geopolymer cement that makes it safe and easy to handle.

Preferably, this geopolymer cement can produce concrete with comparable properties to concrete made with geopolymer cement made using a liquid alkali activator or with Portland cement. SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION In one form of the invention, there is provided a solid component activator for use in a geopolymer cement comprising a silico-aluminate material comprising a mixture of sodium silicate and sodium carbonate for activating the geopolymer cement by increasing reactivity of the silico-aluminate material in the geopolymer cement when forming geopolymer concrete.

The solid component activator of the present invention is stable in the atmosphere unlike activators such as hygroscopic sodium hydroxide that readily absorb moisture from the atmosphere.

They possess high strength and a range of specific properties. They are called "geopolymers" because the raw materials used for their production are mainly minerals of geological origin. History French chemist Joseph Davidovits coined the term "geopolymer" in Examples of geopolymer cement used in construction can be found in Australia, Ireland, the United States, and Russia, to name a few.
