Many of the 46 authors are nationally recognized experts in rhinoplasty. Volume 1 is divided into 7 parts, the first of which covers basic concepts, such as nasal anatomy and analysis, nasal physiology, digital imaging, and coding.
Parts cover basic surgical concepts and address the dorsum, tip, alar rims, and alar base separately. The section on the tip is the most extensive and comprises 10 chapters. The last section covers surgery of the chin. Volume 2 is divided into 4 parts that cover secondary rhinoplasty, management of the airway, special topics and advances, and the personal approaches of 7 rhinoplasty experts each with their own chapter.
The 4 included DVDs cover numerous surgical techniques, including primary and secondary rhinoplasty, harvesting cartilage, and tip grafting. The contributing authors include recognized experts in rhinoplasty who have backgrounds in plastic surgery 37 and facial plastic surgery 8 , which provides the reader with a broad base of rhinoplasty experience and knowledge. Each chapter is laid out in a logical format and is well illustrated with diagrams, case examples, intraoperative photos, and sets of before and after photos that complement the text.
Each chapter ends with a bulleted key points section that summarizes the chapter and gives the reader an easy way to review the salient features of each topic. Another notable benefit to the reader is the inclusion of the full text as an electronic book edition through the VitalSource Bookshelf application, which is available for PC and MAC computers, iOS devices, Android devices, and Kindle.
The videos are very clear, well narrated, and instructional. All of the videos include before and after images. The chapter section on the tip is extensive, progressing from basic techniques to suture techniques, grafting, and controlling projection. There is a 3-chapter section that covers chin surgery that is helpful. Surgeons who perform secondary rhinoplasties will appreciate the 7-chapter section that is authored by recognized experts in the field.
There are numerous excellent case examples in that section that are well illustrated and include accompanying text that is easy to follow and very instructive.
I found that section particularly interesting and informative. I also enjoyed the section on special topics, in particular the chapters covering ethnic rhinoplasties, which includes black, Hispanic, Middle Eastern, and Asian noses. A pertinent and completely new addition is the chapter on the role of fillers in rhinoplasty, which contains important technique recommendations and precautions to be followed when using fillers in the nose.
Lastly, the chapters on the personal approaches of the senior contributors provide an in-depth look into how each surgeon approaches rhinoplasty, executes the procedure, and manages the postoperative period. Although very good overall, some of the videos are a bit outdated, and all of them could be redone in a high-definition format.
Many of the artist illustrations are the same ones that were used in the first edition and could be refreshed.
The title of the book may give the impression that it is regional, of limited scope, and not representative of the national and international reputations that the authors have. One third of the authors live in Texas with more having trained in Texas , which risks giving the impression that the authorship is insular. It is possible that both of these aspects might limit the reach and longevity of the text. Kudos are warranted for the inclusion of an electronic book edition; in the future, I would like to see a more interactive media experience, with videos included in the electronic version.
With the preponderance of acellular dermal matrix use in general, its increased use in rhinoplasties, and the increasing number of types available on the market, the use of acellular dermal matrix in the nose probably deserves more formal coverage in the next edition.
As a fan of algorithms and decision trees, I would like to see more like the ones in chapters 21 and Some of the key points sections are too extensive and have more than 25 key points listed, which leads the reader to question whether or not each point is actually key. Lastly, an historical perspective based on techniques that were once popular among the senior contributors but are no longer in use would be of interest as well.
SUMMARY This is a great addition to reference library or tablet with the included electronic book edition of any rhinoplasty surgeon, and I would consider this 2-volume set a must have. Leaving the regional aspect of the title aside, the text and videos are created by internationally recognized rhinoplasty experts with backgrounds in both plastic surgery and facial plastic surgery who represent a broad scope of experience and a knowledge base that is exemplary.
The 4 DVDs are of high quality and are excellent teaching tools. The electronic book edition will be of great value to the current generation of residents and students who are accustomed to digital learning, and it will also benefit the surgeon on the go who wants to leave the heavy text behind.
There are a plethora of excellent case examples throughout the text, with numerous intraoperative photos and before and after photo sets. This extensive collection covers almost every aspect of rhinoplasty that is important to and encountered by the surgeon. I commend the authors on an excellent third edition of Dallas Rhinoplasty: Nasal Surgery by the Masters, am happy to make it part of my library, and look forward to using it as a reference.
