The mobile core network, as you can imagine, is very central to the overall mobile network because it enables the subscribers of a mobile operator to use all the services that they are entitled to. The original GSM networks only had the circuit-switched part that consisted of dedicated circuits for voice calls as well as text messages.

Those networks could also offer limited data sessions but the circuit-switched technique did not prove to be very efficient for data services. You may also check out our circuit-switched vs. What is GGSN? IP format for the internet and sends that to the destination data network e. On the way back, everything is reversed, so it receives data from the external network in the protocol format of the external network, which is then sent to the serving SGSN in the protocol format of the destination.

Just like the other key parts of the mobile core network, GGSN is owned and managed by the mobile operators e. Vodafone, T-Mobile etc. What is SGSN? SGSN provides the packet-switched capability to mobile networks for enabling mobile data services i. The packets of data with information content e. The SGSN is responsible for mobility management, billing, and the management of data sessions.

So, just like the MSC utilises its circuit-switched capabilities to facilitate voice services, SGSN uses its packet-switched capabilities to facilitate data services. This way, it allows mobile phones to be able to connect with external networks. GGSN converts that data into a suitable protocol format e. IP before sending over to the destination external network. On the way back, the process is reversed. So, the data is received from the external network in the format of that network and then converted by GGSN into a protocol format that mobile phones can understand before finally sending to the mobile phone user.
